A pioneering women’s World Cup erased from history
Many people are not aware that there was a women’s World Cup tournament that took place in 1971, long before the more popular FIFA Women’s World Cup began in 1991.
The tournament, known as the Women’s World Football Championship, was organized by the Mexican Football Federation and saw Mexico, Denmark, England, France, Argentina, and Czechoslovakia competing for the title. The event was groundbreaking for women’s football, but unfortunately, it has largely been forgotten and erased from the history books.
It is important to recognize and celebrate the pioneers of women’s football, who paved the way for the successful tournaments we see today. The players and teams who took part in the 1971 Women’s World Football Championship deserve to be remembered for their contributions to the sport.
